The Latest News From the IAA

1,931 Flights Managed on Busiest Day in July 2015

11 Aug 2015

11th August 2015: On the 9th July, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) recorded its busiest day in 2015 with 1,931 flights safely managed in Irish airspace and at the main State airports (Dublin, Cork and Shannon). Total flights in Irish airspace increased by 3.7% in July 2015 compared to July 2014, averaging 1,775 daily flights during the month.

These figures are comparable to the record levels last experienced before the downturn in 2008. In fact, air traffic at Dublin surpassed the July 2008 figures, with an average of 604 daily commercial movements (a total of 18,732 compared to 18,416 in 2008).

The IAA’s North Atlantic Communications service saw a substantial increase of 7.2% in July 2015, whilst there was an increase of 1.6% in Ireland’s en route traffic movements (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land). There were 44,325 North Atlantic Communications flights and 30,376 en route traffic movements during the month.

Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive, IAA said: ‘Irish air traffic is rapidly approaching the all-time highs last experienced before the downturn in 2008 and we’re reaching record peaks on a daily basis in some of our operational areas. It’s tremendous news for the industry. Dublin is doing really well and our en route and North Atlantic Communications services are likewise experiencing robust and sustained growth, reflecting a continued strengthening of the global economy. This is particular important for the IAA as we handle up to 90% of all air traffic between Europe and North America’.

In relation to international arrivals and departures, the commercial terminal traffic for Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports was up by 7.3% in July 2015, when compared to July 2014.  Individually, the July 2015 figures for the three State airports, when compared to the same month in the previous year are:

  • Dublin up 11.8% with an average of 604 commercial daily movements.
  • Cork down 9.7%, with an average of 59 commercial daily movements.
  • Shannon down 10.5% with an average of 66 commercial daily movements (Note that passenger numbers increased due to larger aircraft).
