Irish Air Traffic Continues to Grow in Winter Season

Figures released by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) today indicate that 2016 continues to surpass previous years in terms of air traffic handled. The amount of traffic safely handled by air traffic control climbed by 7.4% in October to 99,029 flights, compared to the same month in 2015. This brings total air traffic handled by the IAA from January-October 2016 to 944,611, up 8.6% against the same period in 2015.
Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive of the IAA said, “Heading into the winter period, air traffic demand remains strong in virtually all areas. With almost 950,000 flights safely handled already this year, I expect us to surpass the one million mark in the next couple of weeks. We’re nearly 9% ahead of where we were this time last year. It’s very encouraging news and a good reflection of the state of the domestic economy as well as demand for air services on the Transatlantic.”
There was an increase of 5.9% in Ireland’s overflight traffic movements (flights, which do not land in Ireland) to 30,823 during October 2016, in comparison to October 2015, as well as a 7.6% increase in North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe /US Flights) to 42,615.
Individually, the October 2016 figures for the three State airports, when compared to the same month in the previous year are:

- Commercial terminal flights at Dublin were up by +7.3 % with an average of 591 daily movements at Dublin.
- Commercial terminal flights at Cork were down by -1.4 %, with an average of 53 daily movements at Cork.
- Commercial terminal flights at Shannon were up by +3.2 % with an average of 55 daily movements at Shannon.
