Irish Aviation Authority (Personnel Licensing) Order, (SI 333 of 2000)
Issue, revalidation and renewal of night rating and night qualification. 21., Night rating and night qualification. 46., (4) The Authority may, at any time or at such times as may be directed, or both, require the holder of a night rating or qualification to undergo a proficiency check carried out by an authorised examiner in accordance with Article 24 of this Order for the purpose of showing that such holder continues to maintain proficiency to act as pilot-in-command while carrying passengers at night., (3) Nothing in this Order shall prohibit the holder of a commercial pilot or airline transport pilot licence issued by the Authority from acting as pilot-in- command of an aircraft carrying passengers at night by reason only of the lack of a night rating on that licence, (2) Limitations: (a) Before exercising the privileges at night, the licence holder shall comply with the requirements specified in sub-paragraph (3)(b) of paragraph 3.

When not subject to the requirements of IAA Aeronautical Notice R.03 (VFR flights at night in the Shannon FIR), Aeronautical Notices AN T.15 (Use of an unlicenced aerodrome by aircraft engaged in instruction in flying) and AN T.16 (Requirements for the use of an aerodrome at night in the Shannon FIR) as applicable, national aviation regulations permit the operation of unlicensed aerodromes/helipads (e.g. airstrip at a private residence or farm, a surface mounted hospital or private helipad)., Pilots of aircraft conducting flight inspections may be required to fly at altitudes below that at which routine flights are conducted., Lighting of Wind Turbines During Con struction To ensure proper conspicuity of wind turbines at night during construction, all turbines should be lighted with temporary lighting once they reach a height of 328 feet (100 m) or greater until the permanent lighting configuration is activated., The lights should be positioned to ensure a pilot has an unobstructed view of at least one light at each level., This results in a reduction in the time period that the obstacles lights are operating, specifically at night, thus providing a mitigation to the visual impact of the obstacle lights in light sensitive areas / nearby communities.

Plan to reach your destination at least one hour before sunset, unless qualified, equipped and prepared for night flying., Note: Commercial Air Transport night flying is prohibited in single engine helicopters in most States., Always minimise the time that the helicopter is at greatest risk from an engine failure., Maintain a listening watch at all times and make radio calls in the circuit at the proper places and listen and look for other traffic, Take care at aerodromes where identification of the runways can be confused, i.e. 02 and 20.
