Dublin Driving Irish Air Traffic Growth

10 Apr 2013

10 April 2013: The Irish Aviation Authority safely and efficiently handled approximately 1,400 flights per day on average in March 2013. The single busiest day was 8th March, when 1,461 flights were managed in Irish airspace.

Dublin recorded a very positive month in March 2013 with commercial terminal traffic for international arrivals and departures at the airport up by 4.1%* with an average of 407 daily commercial aircraft movements. The general trend of growth at Dublin is driving overall Irish terminal traffic upward, with the total up 3% in March*.

The positive terminal performance is offset somewhat by a weaker position for Ireland’s en route traffic (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land) with a year on year decline of -2.1% during March and -3.5% year to date.  Similarly, North Atlantic Communication flights (Europe–North America) saw a decrease of -3.1% in March and -3.7% year to date.

In the global context, information recently published regarding February 2013 by IATA is encouraging. Passenger travel growth accelerated strongly in February, responding to the improved business environment. Strong demand helped passenger load factors reach record highs and yields have shown renewed signs of increase, with current levels up 1% on a year ago. The outlook for air travel remains positive with business confidence pointing to further growth, but much depends on Eurozone stability: the major downside risk to the current growth trend.
