Thanks to a buoyant US economy, North Atlantic air traffic surged ahead during April 2015.

The Irish Aviation Authority’s (IAA) traffic figures for April 2015 indicate that en route traffic movements (flights which do not land in Ireland) jumped by 9.4% to 27,016 movements compared to the same month in 2014. North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe/US Flights) also saw an increase of 5.8% in April to 35,896 flights.

Total flights in Irish airspace increased by +5.6% in April 2015 when compared to April 2014. 

At the main airports, Dublin Airport has also reported strong growth in April, with an increase of 6.1% in commercial terminal movements. However, large falls were recorded at both Shannon (down 20.4%) and Cork (down 14.5%)

Eamonn Brennan, IAA Chief Executive said, “It is encouraging to see strong growth in air traffic demand on the North Atlantic. A number of international airlines, particularly from North America and the Middle East are expanding their transatlantic operations and we’re seeing that feed through each month into Irish airspace. So far this year, Dublin is nearly 9% ahead of last year (January – April) and is maintaining its strong upward trend but we would like to see an improvement at Cork and Shannon”.
