IAA Extends Reduced Separation within Irish Airspace

11 Mar 2016

The IAA seamlessly implemented an airspace change at 00:01 this morning. The change has increased the amount of Irish airspace where 5 nautical mile(nm) separation between aircraft is allowed by an additional 120,000 km squared, approximately one quarter of total Irish Airspace. This airspace previously required that aircraft were provided with 10nm separation. The change results from the implementation of advanced radar systems and will benefit IAA customers as reduced separation standards allow customers to fly more optimal user preferred routes.

The change also increased airspace capacity. The IAA has been implementing free route airspace since 2008. Over 300,000 aircraft transited Irish airspace in 2015. This change will lead to additional savings of up to 10Kg of fuel and 30Kg of C02 per flight.

Peter Kearney, Director ATM Operations and Strategy said “This seamless airspace change further underlines the IAA’s commitment to continuous improvement through the provision of safe and efficient services delivering high customer satisfaction.”
