Irish Terminal Air Traffic Up Despite Impact of Storms

11 Feb 2014

11 February 2014: Irish terminal air traffic grew by 6.5% in January. Dublin continues to lead the domestic recovery and has recorded its eleventh consecutive month of air traffic growth.

Individually, the figures for the three State airports are:

• Dublin up 8.1% with an average of 396 daily movements.
• Cork down 2.5%, with an average of 48 daily movements.
• Shannon up 3.2% with an average of 38 daily movements.

North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe to North America and vice versa) saw a marginal increase of 0.5% in January 2014, when compared to January 2013.

Ireland’s en route traffic (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land), decreased by 9.2% in January against a backdrop of extremely challenging operating conditions on the North Atlantic and across the United States.

Peter Kearney, Director of Air Traffic Operations and Strategy said ‘Continued strong performance in our terminal business is very encouraging. Recent announcements by a number of airlines suggests growth will continue for the remainder of the year”.

Typically, over 90% of all air traffic on the North Atlantic passes through Irish airspace. In January this year almost 36,000 aircraft operated through Irish Airspace despite the impact of stronger more frequent North Atlantic storms and heavy snowfall across the eastern seaboard of the United States.

There was an average of 1,148 daily flights during January 2014, with the busiest day being 10th January with 1,369 flights in Irish airspace.
