Growth Across All Areas of Irish Air Traffic Ahead of Aviation Industry Awards: Best Month So Far in 2014

10th June 2014: For the first time in 2014, air traffic increased in all areas throughout Ireland in May, with total flights up 4.6% when compared to the same month last year. This includes flights at Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports, en route flights (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land) and North Atlantic Communications flights.

IAA Chief Executive, Eamonn Brennan said: 'Having this news ahead of tonight's inaugural Aviation Industry Awards is really encouraging. Dublin and Shannon are continuing to perform really well and we're really pleased to see Cork report moderate growth for the first time in 2014. We have a fantastic award ceremony taking place at the DoubleTree Hilton (Burlington Road) to give industry recognition to the numerous aviation businesses that are driving our sector forward. We're expecting over 500 guests, along with Leo Varadkar T.D., Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, from 70 shortlisted companies, including the three State airports in a number of categories'.

There was an average of 1,618 daily flights during May 2014, with the busiest day being 16th May with 1,791 flights in Irish airspace.
 
There was an increase of 2.8% in Ireland's en route traffic movements during May 2014, in comparison to May 2013.  North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe / North America flights) saw an increase of 5.8% in May 2014, when compared to May 2013.

There were 28,374 en route traffic movements and 37,731 North Atlantic Communications flights during May 2014.

On a cumulative basis, the change in en route traffic movements and North Atlantic Communications flights for the period January-May 2014, compared to the same period last year, was -3.6% and 3.4% respectively.

In relation to international arrivals and departures, the commercial terminal traffic for Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports was up by 8.1% in May 2014, when compared to May 2013.  Individually, the May 2014 figures for the three State airports are:

  • Dublin up 7.5% with an average of 512 daily commercial movements.
  • Cork up 0.8%, with an average of 61 daily commercial movements.
  • Shannon up 21.7% with an average of 65 daily commercial movements.

On a cumulative basis, commercial terminal traffic for Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports for the period January to May 2014 was up by 6.6% when compared to the same period in 2013.
