Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) - Operational Recommendations

18 Oct 2014

Saturday, 18th October 2014: Following cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the ICAO jointly with the WHO, the ECDC as well as airline associations like IATA have published and are continuing to update information relating to the EVD and recommendations regarding prevention of EVD transmission.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a Special Information Bulletin (SIB) with the following recommendation(s):

•The Agency draws the aviation community’s attention to information and guidelines provided by the WHO, ECDC and IATA.

•In particular, the WHO recommendations for public health authorities and transport sector include operational recommendations for the case of a passenger presenting symptoms compatible with EVD on board of an aircraft, in accordance with IATA guidelines, that are available here: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/safety/health/Documents/health-guidelines-cabin-crew-2011.pdf

•The Agency furthermore recommends that aircraft operating from or to affected countries and carrying passengers, are equipped with one or more Universal Precaution Kits (UPKs). Such kits may be used to protect crew members who are assisting potentially infectious cases of suspected communicable disease and in cleaning up and correctly discarding any potential infectious contents.
