2013 A Year of Positive Growth at Dublin Airport

15th January 2014: 2013 was a positive year for Irish air traffic and saw strong growth at Dublin Airport. Traffic at the State’s largest airport was up 4.5% in 2013, while total flights in Irish airspace were up 0.3%.

A number of airlines announced new international and regional routes to Dublin, Shannon and Knock that will greatly boost Irish air traffic in 2014. These include new Aer Lingus routes to Toronto and San Francisco and Ryanair’s new routes to Lisbon, Marrakesh and Prague. Etihad have also increased both the capacity and frequency of their Dublin/Abu Dhabi route.

Eamonn Brennan, Chief Executive, IAA said ‘We are really encouraged to see such strong growth in our air traffic figures for 2013 and are confident that the year ahead will be even more positive. The traffic statistics reflect a renewed confidence in the general economy and in the Irish aviation industry, while the announcement of new routes in and out of Ireland is a very positive and welcome development’.

In relation to international arrivals and departures in December, the commercial terminal traffic for Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports was up by +5.4% in December 2013.

Individually, the December 2013 figures for the three State airports, when compared to the same month in the previous year are:

  • Dublin up 6.6% with an average of 390 daily movements.
  • Cork down 7.4%, with an average of 46 daily movements.
  • Shannon up 10.1%, with an average of 42 commercial movements.

North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe /North America) saw an increase of 2.9% in December 2013. There was a decrease of -3% in Ireland’s en-route traffic movements (flights that pass through Irish airspace but do not land) during December 2013.

In total, North Atlantic Communications flights grew by 1% in 2013, while en-route traffic movements decreased by 1%.

Total flights in Irish airspace in December 2013 marginally decreased by -0.3% when compared to same month the previous year. There was an average of 1,194 daily flights during December 2013, with the busiest day being 20th December with 1,428 flights in Irish airspace.
