1,800 Flights Per Day in Irish Airspace in June

12th July 2015: The IAA’s traffic figures for June 2015 indicate that total flights in Irish airspace have increased by 2.4% when compared to June 2014, with an average of 1,800 flights daily. The busiest day was 19th June with 1,975 flights in Irish airspace.

The IAA’s analysis of North Atlantic Communications flights (Europe / North America) saw an increase of 3.8% to 42,045 flights in June 2015, when compared to June 2014. There were 30,022 en route traffic movements in June, down 1.8% when compared to the same month in 2014.

In relation to international arrivals and departures, commercial terminal traffic for Shannon, Dublin and Cork airports was up by 10.8% in June 2015, when compared to June 2014. Individually, the June 2015 figures for the three State airports, when compared to the same month in the previous year are:

  • Dublin up by 15.3% with an average of 603 commercial movements daily. This robust growth includes the introduction of the first scheduled service that directly connects Ireland to Sub-Saharan Africa. This new Ethiopian Airlines route connects Addis Ababa to Dublin and onward to Los Angeles, connecting three continents.
  • Cork down by 4.1%, with an average of 60 commercial movements daily. In positive news, CityJet are set to commence a new route from Cork to London City in September, while Aer Lingus have announced plans to introduce a service to Düsseldorf in 2016.  
  • Shannon down by 7.9% with an average of 72 commercial movements daily. Fortunately, passenger numbers actually increased by 1% in June due to larger aircraft being used on routes.

Some of the other highlights in air traffic growth to/from Ireland in June include:

  • Ireland / North America flights up 5%
  • Ireland / UK flights up 8 %
  • Ireland / Turkey flights up 45%
