The IAA is a member of NORACON, the NORth European and Austrian CONsortium, along with the air navigation services providers of Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden and the Swedish airport authority, Swedavia.
NORACON is a member of Single European Sky Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) and its purpose is to ensure impact from its various partners in the development of the future European air traffic management business.
NORACON members handle approximately 13% of the European IFR traffic and covers are responsible for an even larger proportion of airspace. Major parts of the NORACON airspace are situated on high latitudes and all the way up to the North Pole.
Within the SESAR Joint Undertaking, NORACON leads Work Programme 8 ‘Information Management' and is making significant contributions to both operational and technical areas where it feels the advantages and skills of the members can be best utilised from a European as well as a regional perspective.
Due to the availability of airspace, both continental and oceanic, and with complex airports with periods of relatively low traffic, the region is well suited for performing validation through live trials and pre-operational use.
Thus one key contribution will be the access to an operational trials environment, including Oceanic ASAS (Airborne Separation Assistance System) procedures, terminal operations using advanced AMAN/DMAN (Arrival Manager/Departure Manager) functions, environmentally friendly approach procedures as well as free route airspace operations.
